Sirtaki or Syrtaki is a popular dance from Greece created in 1964 for the movie "Zorba The Greek". It is not a traditional Greek folkdance, but a mixture of slow & fast versins of the Hasapiko dance. The music of Mikis Theodorakis has been an inspiration for the Sirtaki/Hasapiko dance. Hasapiko or "Butcher's Dance" originated from members of the Arvanites Butcher's Guild in Constantinople during Byzantine rule who danced this dance.
If you've visited the Greek Islands or Mainland you have surely seen Sirtaki danced in bars & tavernas played by local Greek musicians. The main instruments used are guitar, drums & the always popular Bouzouki, a Greek stringed instrument similar to a mandolin but with a longer neck.
